Rachael Lively, born in Lincoln Nebraska, traveled throughout the Midwest as a child with parents,
J.R., and
Laurie Walsh as they Thoroughbreds at the tracks in the area.
They lived in Chicago when she was 10 where she started showing with her mother, Laurie as instructor.
They did very well with the new venture, and managed year end champion in both the Equitation and Jr. Hunter divisions with a horse owned by the farm where they were living at the time.
She rode in her first Jumper classs that same year on a mare that they bought for her out of the broodmare band at a neighboring farm.
The Jumpers became a lifelong hobby, and she rode in her first Grand Prix at age 14 on the same mare. They had moved to Maryland around that time after a stay in NJ where Rachael started gallopping horses for her father at DMS Farm near Mt Holly.
At age 17 she moved to Ocala Florida for a winter which led to working in Boston, MA focusing on the race horses, and speinding two cold winters in the north.
Returning to Maryland in the late 90's, Rachael went to work at Pimlico Racetrack as a freelance exercise rider, and also gallopped and broke horses at many of the area farms for trainers including, Billy Christmas, J.B.Secor, and Billy Meister.
During the Spring of 2000 she rode some steeplechase races for longtime friend, Billy Meister, and was
Delaware Valley Point to Point leading rider.
Rachael and
Troy Lively met at the racetrack although both had worked in the Seeplechase field as well. They shared a common enjoyment of working with young horses, and worked together for serveral years before being married in 2005.
Together they keep a string of horses at Laurel Park in Maryland, and at
Roger Smithwick's Hydes, MD farm on Hydes rd.
They train together, and at the farm, while Troy still breaks a few horses, Rachael enjoys reschooling the odd horse for show, and campaigning the occassional Steeplechase horse at the local Hunt Meets.
Their children,
Cassie Lynn Lively, and
Lauren Elizabeth Lively already ride their ponies, Porkchop, and The General.
Cassie competed in her first
NAPPA trot race in 2009 at age 15months!
Lauren is planning her debut in 2010 around age 18 months!
